Alexandre Kostov

Alexandre Kostov graduated from the  University of  Sofia “Sv. Kliment Ohridski” (MS degree) and obtained his PhD degree from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). Since 1984, he is affiliated to the Institute of Balkan Studies (now Institute of Balkan Studies & Center of Thracology) at BAS and between 2010 and 2018 he was its director. Alexandre Kostov is Corresponding Member of BAS, Full Professor, Doctor of Sciences and Chairman of the Academic Council of his Institute. His research is focused on the Balkans modern and contemporary history (economic and social history, history of technology and history of science, international relations). Since 2015 he is President of the International Association of South East European Studies (AIESEE).  In 2019 he was elected Corresponding Member of the International Academy of the History of Science, Paris.

Professor, ISSP-BAS; Leader of Biomolecular Layers Lab, ISSP-BAS; Founder and Head of the Department of Soft Matter Physics of ISSP.  Director of ISSP-BAS; Academician of BAS (2003); Chairman of OPMN-SAChK of BAS. Honorary member of ISSP-BAS (2015), Honorary Chairman of the Union of Physicists in BG. 20 temporary positions abroad: visiting scientist, guest associate professor and visiting professor in Europe, USA, Japan and India. Coordinator of EU-INERA-REGPOT project. Advisory Editor of one German journal and member of editorial boards of one Russian and three Bulgarian scientific journals. Six new effects in liquid crystal physics have been discovered experimentally and explained theoretically by him. The discovery of bioflexoelectricity stands out.  Over 200 peer-reviewed original and review articles.  Monograph in English: Lyotropic states of matter, Gordon & Breach Sci.  Publs., L.-N. J. (1999), awarded with the Academic Prize in Physics for 2000. Monograph in Bulgarian: Physics of Living Matter, "Marin Drinov" Academic Edition (2015). More than 3200 citations. 


Asen Gudev

Prof. Assen Goudev is a board certified in   Internal Medicine and Cardiology,  head of the Cardiology Departmen,  Queen Giovanna University Hospital. Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine 2006-2021. His research interests are in the field of lipid metabolism disorders, preventive cardiology, free-radical processes in medicine, vascular-adhesive molecules, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure.
Chairman of the Bulgarian Society of Cardiology 2010-2012 and 2020-2022. Member of the Editorial Board of Cardiology (Karger Publ Group).
He was elected a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in 2018.


Atanas Semov

Atanas Markov Semov is Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law of the SU "St. Cl. Ohridski", where he teaches "European Union Law". He is Doctor of "EU Law" and Doctor of Legal Sciences. He is Winner of the "Jean Monnet Chair of the EU" award for his research on the EU judicial system. Since 2018, he has been elected a judge in the Bulgarian Constitutional Court. Prof. Semov is the author of 15 scientific monographs, 32 textbooks, over 60 studies, over 80 scientific articles, editor of more than 30 scientific books, organizer of 12 international scientific conferences, etc. His scientific and teaching activities led to the creation of an independent field in the legal science - "EU Law". He demonstrates a great public activity in affirming the priority role of education and science in Bulgaria thus defending the patriotic education and preservation of the literary Bulgarian language.


Dimitar Dimitrov

Acad. Dimitar Dimitrov

Dimitar Velkov Dimitrov is Academician of BAS, Full Professor and Doctor of Sociological Sciences. He is the Chairman of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at BAS. His research activity is in the field of theory and methodology of empirical sociological research, sociology of labor, sociology of conflict, sociology of power and politics. He has published 13 monographs and over one hundred articles in national and international scientific journals. He lectures at Sofia University "St. Cl. Ohridski", UNWE, GSSE, NBU and VFU. Dr. Dimitrov was a visiting professor on Sociology of labor at the University of Clermont-Ferrand - France. He is the creator and chief coordinator of the National Academic Network, and chairs its Advisory Board. He is a member of the International Sociological Association and the International Sociological Association of French-speaking Sociologists.


Evdokia Pasheva

Corresponding member Evdokia Pasheva is a molecular biologist, doctor of biological sciences. Since 1980 he worked at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, and from 1983 at the Institute of Molecular Biology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). She was the Chief Scientific Secretary of the BAS in the period 2012 - 2017, and is currently the Deputy Chairman of the BAS. She is a member of the executive council of the European Science Foundation (ESF), a member of the Scientific Board of the International Basic Sciences Program (IBSP) of UNESCO and of the National Council of UNESCO. She was an invited lecturer at the Curie Institute, Paris, an invited professor at the University of Nantes, France and at the Joseph Fourier University, Grenoble. She was awarded the Insignia of merit to the Bulgarian Academy of sciences and the Honorary Medal "Prof. Marin Drinov" on tape. He is the head of a number of international and national scientific projects. Her scientific interests and areas of competence are molecular and cellular biology, DNA repair and replication, epigenetic control, chromatin remodeling, carcinogenesis, tumor markers and antitumor agents, cell signaling pathways and mechanisms, DNA/protein interactions.


Evelina Slavcheva

Prof. Evelina Slavcheva, DSc, Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) is a pprominent scientist in the field of electrochemistry and electrochemical materials science with pioneering developments in hydrogen electrochemical technologies and systems. Her research interests also include electrocatalysis, corrosion and corrosion protection, as well as applications of electrochemistry in medicine and sensorics. She has been a research fellow in United Kingdom and Germany. Since 2015 Prof. Slavcheva is the Director of the Acad. Evgeni Budevski Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES-BAS) and since 2018 she is the head of the Centre of Competence "HITMOBIL", uniting 10 scientific organizations. She chairs the BAS General Assembly since 2016.


Georgi Minchev

Acad. Georgi Minchev

Georgi Minchev – composer graduated from the Bulgarian State Conservatory. He studied in Moscow, USA, England and France. Until 2000, he held the position: "Musical Director and Chief Artistic Director of the BNR". For many years he was Secretary, Deputy Chairman and General Secretary of the Union of Bulgarian Composers (https://georgiminchev.com/). He was awarded the European prize "Lorenzo the Magnificent" of the International Academy "Medici" in Florence and was awarded the title "Honorary Senator of the Academy". He is the winner of the "Golden Quintet" award of the Union of Bulgarian Composers, of the Great Orphan Wanderer Award of the Bulgarian National Radio for overall contribution and of the "Golden Century" - the highest award of the Ministry of the culture. He was awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of Sofia".


Hristo Najdenski

Prof. Hristo Miladinov Najdenski is Corresponding Member of BAS and DSci in Veterinary Medicine (specialty Microbiology). He is a Head of Department Infectious Microbiology and had been a Director of the Stephan Angeloff Institute of Microbiology at BAS (2012-2019). His research interests are in the field of infectious microbiology, zoonotic bacteria, virulence factors, bacterial-host interactions, infectious immunology, molecular biology and ecology of pathogenic bacteria, new antibacterial agents, and antimicrobial resistance. He is lecturing at the New Bulgarian University (Sofia) and leads five lecture courses in different areas of microbiology. He has multidisciplinary and international achievements by executing many projects in Europe and Bulgaria (FP4, FP5, ACIP, European space Agency, National Science Foundation, etc.). He is the author of more than 235 scientific articles published in nationally and international journals (H factor 25; citations >2200, Scopus).


Ivan Iltchev

Prof. Ivan Iltchev teaches history of the Balkans at Sofia University. Corr. Member of BAS. Doctor of historical sciences. He is author of fifteen monographs, around a hundred articles and hundreds texts in the media and scripts of documentaries. He has been dean of the Faculty of history and twice Rector of Sofia university, Chairman of the Association of Balkan universities and Chairman of the 15+1 Association of Eastern European and Chinese universities. He has taught for a full academic year at Ohio State University, The University of Maryland, Woodrow Wilson Center, the university of Chiba, Japan, The International Hellenic University, Thessaloniki and has read cycles of lectures and occasional lectures at more than 30 universities all over the world. Presently he is the head of the Center of Excellence “Heritage LG”, he is a member of the international committee on history teaching of the Council of Europe and he is doctor honoris causa and professor emeritus of universities in Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Armenia, China and Mongolia. 


Ivan Ivanov

Academician Ivan G. Ivanov is a molecular biologist, professor, doctor of biological sciences. He graduated in organic chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the SU "St. Cl. Ohridski", worked at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, after which he continued his scientific career at the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) at the BAS. He was a long-time head of the "Gene Regulations" department, Deputy Director and Director of IMB. He has worked at elite European universities and institutes, as well as a visiting professor at the Universities of New Brunswick and Toronto, Canada. Under his scientific supervision, 33 doctoral theses and over 60 master's theses were defended. He has been a long-time teacher at the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy in Sofia, where he was teaching Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering Technologies. He is currently the chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences and Editor in Chief of the BAS Magazine. His research interests are in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry and bioorganic chemistry.


Ivan Zagorchev

Academician Ivan S. Zagorchev obtained his Ph.D. (1968) and D. Sc. (1987) in Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, and has been Professor (1992), Deputy Director of the Geological Institute, Chief of the section of Geotectonics and Regional Geology (2004-2009), Chairman of the Scientific Council (since 2015). Chief Editor (1990-2008) of the journal Geologica Balcanica and member of editorial boards of many other Bulgarian and foreign scientific journals and books. He is the author of more than 350 scientific papers and 60 popular science papers. The main contributions of Academician Zagorchev are in the fields of regional geology of Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula: stratigraphy, tectonics (neotectonics and seismotectonics included), petrology and geochronology.


Konstantinos Nihoritis

Konstantinos Nihoritis is a professor of Slavic Studies (Spiritual Life and Culture of the Slavic Peoples) at the University of Thessaloniki – Makedonias, Faculty of Balkan Studies, Slavic Studies and Oriental Studies, where he lectures in the disciplines: Bulgarian Language and Literature, Cyril and Methodius Studies, Mount Athos and the Slavs, Studies of Slavic sources, “Problems with translations into Bulgarian” and others. He defended his PhD thesis at the Cyril and Methodius Science Center at BAS (1987) and his thesis for DSci at the University of Veliko Tarnovo “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” (2000). He was awarded the “Ivan Vazov” medal by the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad (2002), Doctor Honoris Causa of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” (2020), Foreign member of BAS (2023), etc. Prof. Nihoritis is a member of the editorial boards of several international scientific journals such as Konštantinove Listy, issued by the Slovak University of Nitra; Fragmenta Hellenoslavica, Thessaloniki University Press; “Proglas”, published by the University of Veliko Tarnovo “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”, etc.


Krassimir Atanassov

Krassimir T. Atanassov was born on 23 March 1954. He studied in the Department of Mathematics in Sofia University. In 1997 defended dissertations for Doctor of Technical (Computer) Science and in 2000 for Doctor of Mathematical Sciences. Since 1998 he is a Full Professor in the Department of Bioinformatics and Mathematical Modelling of Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, since 2021 is an Academician of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, since 2013 – Fellow of IFSA, since 2018 – Senior of IEEE. He defined the concepts of intuitionistic fuzzy sets, generalized nets and investigated their basic properties and their applications. He is an author of more than 800 papers in journals, 300 conference reports and 38 monographs. He is a member of the Editorial Boards of more than 20 international journals.


Mladen Savov

Corr. mem. Dr. Sc. Mladen Savov is Doctor of Sciences and full professor at the Institute of mathematics and informatics at the Bulgarian academy of sciences. His research interests lie in probability theory and mathematical statistics. He investigates the properties of different classes of stochastic processes using techniques from areas such as functional and complex analysis, integral equations, asymptotic analysis, etc. Mladen Savov has authored 37 scientific papers and 1 monograph. He has supervised 1 PhD student. Mladen Savov is also a professor at the Faculty of mathematics and informatics of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", where he teaches courses at bachelor and master level.  He is a member of the editorial board of since 2022.


Oleg Mushkarov

Acad. Oleg Mushkarov

Academician Oleg Mushkarov is Doctor of Mathematical Sciences and professor at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. His research interests are in the following areas of mathematics: Complex Analysis, Complex Differential Geometry and Twistor Theory. He is one of the founders of the Bulgarian mathematical school in the field of Complex Differential Geometry. He is the author of 70 scientific articles, 4 monographs, 15 science books and over 60 popular science articles. He has been a supervisor of 3 PhD and 9 graduate students. Acad. Mushkarov has been the leader of the Bulgarian teams for the Balkan and International Mathematical Olympiads, and the Director of the High School Student Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. He is the Chair of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, and the Director of the International Center for Mathematical Sciences - Sofia.


Vladimir Zarev

Vladimir Zarev was born on October 5, 1947 in Sofia. He graduated in Bulgarian Philology at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". From 1976 he worked in the elite magazine for Bulgarian and translated literature "Savremennik", and from 1988 he is its editor-in-chief. Vladimir Zarev is a writer, he has published 22 books. Twelve of them are novels, among them: the trilogy "The Genesis", "The Exodus", "The Law" (based on which one of the most watched TV series "The Tree of Life" was filmed), "Decay", "Worlds", "The Monster", "Lost in Freedom", "Priest Bogomil and the Perfection of Fear", "Year 1850". His works have been translated in Germany, USA, USSR and Russia, Austria, Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, Albania, Macedonia. Vladimir Zarev is the winner of the national literary awards: "Ivan Vazov", "Elin Pelin", "Mihalaki Georgiev", "Stoyan Mihailovski", "Paisiy Hilendarski" the highest state award for art. In 2000, he was awarded the first degree “Stara Planina” order and in 2022 he was elected Academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.


Yatchko Ivanov

Academician Yatchko Ivanov is Full Professor, DSc., engineer and associated member of the |Institute of |Mechanics at BAS. His research areas are: rheology of composites, physicochemical mechanics, rheology an ecology, technology and ecology, intelligent materials and structures, polymer processes, technology and R & D politics, adult education and long life learning. Hi was visiting professor in Mac Gil University, Montreal, Canada and Ecole des mine de Doue, France. Hi is founder and longtime chair of the International school on rheology and one of the founders of the European rheological society, member of the International committee of rheology, French, English and American societies of rheology, European Academy of Sciences and Arts and Engineering Academy of Serbia. Hi is author and coauthor of 3 monographs, over 350 scientific articles, 7 inventions and 4 patents. Hi is a member of the editorial boards of 4 international journals, long time Editor in Chief of the “Journal of BAS”. Presently he is an Emeritus Editor in Chief of the latter journal. Hi is also Editor in Chief of the international journals “Engineering Sciences” and “Series on Biomechanics”.
