Author(s): Vladimir SimovKeywords: bipolar affective disorder, bipolar depression, unipolar depressionAbstract: Objective: To search for sociodemographic and clinical identifiers of the bipolar nature of a current major depressive episode. The study focused on the search for differences between depression within bipolar affective disorder (BAD) and unipolar depression (UPD), based on the cited findings in the scientific literature and on the own results of the studied clinical sample. Method: 140 consecutively hospitalized patients, 23 men and 37 women with UPD and respectively 23 men and 57 patients with bipolar depression (BPD) diagnosed with M.I.N.I. РWC 5.0.0 Bulgarian Version (DSM–IV) and the 17-point Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17), were examined with a specially created Bipolar Depression Screening Card (СКБПД) containing over 65 parameters covering НАУЧЕН ДЯЛ 10 Списание на БАН 5/2024 demographic and anamnestic data, somatic and psychiatric comorbidities, psychosocial development, onset and course of the disease, dysfunctions in everyday life and clinical markers. Results: BPD affects more women than men; the onset of the disease is earlier and there are more depressive episodes; a family burden for hypothyroidism, BAR and temperamental predisposition is also found; BAR has increased comorbidity with obesity, migraine, and alcohol abuse. Clinical indicators such as irritability, impulsivity, mood fluctuations, increased verbal output and restlessness significantly distinguish BPD from UPD. Conclusion: Factors such as family history of BAD, earlier onset of index depressive episode, evening chronotype (evening mood brightening and energy surge), mood reactivity and affective swings, impulsivity, irritability, mood alternation, increased motor and increased verbal output, can serve to differentiate bipolar from unipolar depression.

Sustainable Urban Development – Some Good Practices
Author(s): Atanas Kovachev, Katya AntonovaKeywords: sustainability, sustainable cities, sustainable construction, circular economyAbstract: The rapid pace of urbanization leads to an unprecedented increase in the built environment, and in this sense, the state of the building stock will be a major factor in the creation of sustainable cities that contribute to achieving sustainable development. Construction is one of the top three polluters, along with transport (23%) and other industries (32%). According to research, about 75% of the building stock in the EU is energy inefficient, with 75% of the total energy consumed for heating and cooling and 25% for hot water and electricity. Demographic trends and forecasts of increasing urbanization suggest an increase in demand and an increase in the construction of buildings and facilities, which implies that energy needs and the use of materials for this sector will increase by 50% by 2060. carbon neutrality by 2050, enshrined in the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of the authors of this study is to examine the state of the building stock in Bulgaria, to identify some good practices related to sustainable design and sustainable construction and to give recommendations for its promotion in Bulgaria.

Geography or Earth Sciences (Geosciences) in Bulgarian Secondary Education
Author(s): Ivan ZagorchevAbstract: The paper discusses the knowledge gaps in the secondary (high school) education in Bulgaria in respect to the Earth Sciences, and the necessity to introduce a systematic education system in this area of knowledge. The principal geological, mineralogicalgeochemical and geophysical sciences are lacking presently in the curricula. Seventeen principal topics are proposed for a new education program based on the experience of the past, and on the curricula of modern high schools abroad. The limited and outdated geographical textbooks should be replaced in the Bulgarian secondary education (8th to 11th class) by modern textbooks on the Earth Sciences.
