    Author(s): Nikolay Chernokozhev
Keywords: Dr. Petar Beron, “Bukvar s Razlichni Poucheniya”, the author of the Primer and the European scientist
Abstract: The text recalls the celebration of the centenary of the publication of the “Bukvar s Razlichni Poucheniya” in 1924 and the anthology that marked the anniversary. The anthology collects words, research and bibliographical data on Dr. Petar Beron. The Primer, compiled by P. The article features two images with which Dr. Petar Beron lives in the minds of the Bulgarian people: as the young man, the author of the “Bukvar s Razlichni Poucheniya”, gazing into the future of his compatriots and as the authoritative European scientist, peering into the depths of God’s creation that is the WORLD.
  • Dr. Peter Beron in the Cultural Memory of Bulgaria
    Author(s): Vera Boneva
Abstract: Doctor Petar Beron (1799–1871) was an important historical figure from the era of the National Revival. He is significant for the creation of the first modern textbook “A Primer with Various Teachings” (1824) and for his scientific research in philosophy, geology, astronomy, physico-chemistry, and other academic fields. Donor and organizer of the modern education system, he proclaimed the first clear norms for the organization of schoolwork. Petar Beron emerged as a successful merchant, amassing significant wealth for his time. The long-lasting traces that he left during his life‘s path ensure him an important place in the cultural memory of the nation. The present article traces the main topoi of collective memory related to the personality of Dr. Petar Beron. Scientific research, monuments, celebrations, museum presentations, films, and novels – these are part of the distinguished cultural realities through which the memory of the outstanding public figure is preserved in the Bulgarian national consciousness. The conclusion is that Doctor Petar Beron is relatively densely and actively present in the cultural life of modern Bulgarians – mostly through his textbook for primary school, and not so much with his scientific research, his medical practice, and his large-scale business ventures.

  • “Talk a Little, Listen a Lot” – the Praiseworthy Examples in “Primer with Various Teachings”
    Author(s): Andriana Spasova
Keywords: Petar Beron, short narrative genres, primers, New Bulgarian education, fables and parables
Abstract: The article examines the influence of short narrative genres such as fables, anecdotes, and parables on the formation of reading preferences and moralaesthetic values in the New Bulgarian educational literature during the Bulgarian National Revival. Particular attention is given to Dr. Petar Beron’s Primer with various instructions, also known as Fish Primer (1824), which popularized these genres as part of Enlightenment literature. These concise texts, characterized by their moral didacticism, play a significant role in education by blending elements from ancient, Christian, and folkloric traditions. The study emphasizes the capacity of these genres to convey universal moral messages through allegory and metaphor, making them widely applicable in the context of 19th-century Bulgarian society. Additionally, the interconnections between ancient literature and Bulgarian Revival literature are analyzed, alongside the significance of the secularization and localization of these literary forms.
  • Nikolai Pavlovich and Dr. Petar Beron
    Author(s): Blagovesta Ivanova
Keywords: likeness to nature, portrait, study, sketch, modernity
Abstract: The theoretical aspect of the resemblance to nature is of fundamental importance in the study of the portrait. This article presents a broad historicaltheoretical framework for the creation of the portrait of Dr. Peter Beron by the Revival artist Nikolai Pavlovich as an image of the Enlightener, based on their direct communication. The reasons for the creation of the life-size study are discussed in relation to the artist‘s views, as well as the sketches for the painting, which was executed after his death. The second aspect of the study is to trace the ‚likeness to the person‘ in the interpretation of the image in modern times.
  • Essence of Climate and Geographic Research in the Works of Dr. Petar Beron
    Author(s): Kaloyan Ivanov
Keywords: climate, anisotherm, geography, water currents, winds
Abstract: Dr. Petar Beron wrote his works on the climate of the globe as early as the middle of the 19th century. His research on temperatures in different parts of the continents, atmospheric circulation, sunlight, ocean currents, etc. are fundamental for Bulgarian climatology, but unfortunately unknown. In his works, published in Greek, Dr. Beron makes a connection between orography and the exposure of the slopes of mountains as the main factors thanks to which the science of climatology exists. His research is distinguished by its interdisciplinary nature and a serious spatial component. In addition to the purely theoretical nature of his writings, he also emphasizes the practical application of climate research. Dr. Beron also makes a brief analysis of the climate in urban conditions, which places him as one of the first Bulgarian scientists, founders of urban climatology.
  • “To the Highly Educated Mr Petar Beron” – a Poetic Praise by Georgi Peshakov
    Author(s): Nikoleta Patova
Keywords: Dr. Petar Beron, Georgi Peshakov, the unknown poem about Dr. Beron
Abstract: Georgi Peshakov was one of the first poets of the Bulgarian National Revival. He is the author of the popular “Oda” and “Ridanie” for Yuri Venelin. He also composed a poetic exaltation for Dr. Petar Beron, which remains unpublished. The poems dedicated to the author of the first New Bulgarian textbook, “Primer with Various Instructions”, glorify his work, which is inscribed in the educational idea of progress and its driving force – enlightenment. What is special about this work of exaltation are the exhortatory verses, the purpose of which is to incite the author of the Primer to continue writing textbooks for his fellow countrymen. The unknown poem about Dr. Beron is curious and highlights questions in different ways: about the choice of the important figures to be praised; about the second critical plan behind it; about which prevails in the ode – the praise for what has been done or the reproach for what has not been done. G. Peshakov’s poem is all the more interesting when perceived through the context in which it emerged. This is exactly what Boris Yotsov explores in his article “Dr. Petar Beron i negovite savremennitsi” in the journal. “Uchilishten pregled” from 1934, which is also discussed here. Boris Yotsov traces the publications that appeared during Petr Beron’s lifetime and around his death in various Bulgarian publications. They are not many in number, but outline the reception of the Primer and its author by his contemporaries. Commenting on the reviews in various publications about Beron and his Primer, Boris Yotsov concludes that in the 1930s and 1940s “a cult developed around Beron’s personality and work”. Prof. Yotsov defines Dr. Beron as “the first European in Bulgarian literature” who deserves this recognition “with a book for Bulgarian schools”.
