  • The Connection Between Government, Politics and Public Opinion Presents Us with New Challenges to Solve
    Author(s): Dimitar Dimitrov
Keywords: power, politics, public opinion, demoscopic studies, established facts, social situation, poor professionalism, devaluation of research findings
Abstract: The relationship between power and politics is analyzed in depth. It is reflected in the public opinion as a mirror, and public opinion itself can be considered a corrective, and why not an apologist of the power. The public opinion surveys and their difference with the demoscopic surveys is analyzed. Many authors tend to equal the struggle for power with the well-known economic rivalry, without realizing that the distribution of wealth and power is of a fundamentally different character. While wealth can be shared, power is not.
  • Contemporary Trends for Visualization in Ophthalmic Surgery
    Author(s): Dimitar Grupchev
    Abstract: Purpose:
The aim of the present study is a comparative analysis of operative interventions on the anterior ocular surface using a classical and optical coherence tomography-guided 3D operating microscope.

    Methodology:
The methodology of a classic 3D visualization system, complete with intraoperative optical coherence tomography, was used. To analyze the advantages and disadvantages, 40 amniotic membrane transplants were performed, half with classical and the other half with 3D visualization.

    Results:
The average time of operations with 3D technology is 7.9 ±1.8 minutes and although there is no statistical difference, it is better than that of classical technology (8.2 ±2.3 minutes) Complications when using Artevo 800 with mandatory iOST application are less, and epithelialization is significantly better, which is reflected in a statistically significant improvement in vision. The likely reasons for these results are primarily related to the better control due to real-time OCT.

    Conclusion:
New technologies have an important place in ophthalmic surgery both as a means of training and as a condition for better quality and effective ophthalmic surgery. The three-dimensional technology combined with iOST has numerous ergonomic, technical and technological advantages that enable a new generation of surgical treatment.
  • Ivan Brozhka’s Letters to Konstantin Irechek – an Interesting Source for Our Post-Liberation History
    Author(s): Aleksandra Trifonova
Keywords: History of Bulgaria after Liberation, Serbo-Bulgarian War, “Bulgarian” Czechs, education
Abstract: In the personal archival fund of Prof. Konstantin Irechek, which is stored in the Scientific Archive of the BAS, there are 40 letters and postcards, handwritten and sent by Ivan (Jan) Brozhka to Irechek. The Czech Brozhka (1853–1927), a long-time teacher of Latin in the Sofia high schools, also considered the founder of classical philology in Bulgaria, was an active assistant to Irechek in various cultural and educational endeavors immediately after the Liberation. The letters cover the period from 1885 to 1900 and have great informative value: they contain information about all the most important events happening not only in Sofia, where Brozhka settled, but also in our country as a whole. The significance of these notices is not their uniqueness, but in the fact that they present moments of the new Bulgarian history through the eyes of a foreigner who has already begun to perceive Bulgaria as his second homeland. Here I present in translation one of the most interesting letters – dated November 10/22, 1885, describing the stormy events of the first week of the Serbo-Bulgarian war – both at the front and in Sofia.
